Light for every part of the day

An open living space with separate lighting for the worktop, dining table and sofa, controlled from the routes through the room.

Interior with a layered lighting scheme

Project overview

Whole-home lighting,
thought through.

Bring useful task lighting and quieter evening light into the same room.

The lighting plan separates the working surfaces, dining area and background light. Fixture positions are checked against furniture before installation.

Illustrative case study. People, location, cost and timing are demonstration details.

Our process

Four steps through the project.

  1. 01

    Map everyday use

Mark the worktop, table, seating and routes through the room.

  2. 02

    Plan the groups

Choose fittings and controls for three independent lighting layers.

  3. 03

    Coordinate the fit

Install around the joinery and decoration programme.

  4. 04

    Adjust in the room

Check the light on the surfaces and demonstrate each setting.

Ceiling lighting installation in a home

The problem

What needed to change

A single bright lighting group served the kitchen, dining table and sofa. It worked for cleaning but left the whole room lit when only one area was in use. New joinery also changed where the useful light needed to fall.

The solution

How the pieces came together

The plan divided the room into task, dining and background lighting. Switch positions followed the routes through the room, while the pendant was centred on the table rather than the ceiling. The dimming range was checked with the chosen lamps before the final walkthrough.

A small number of clearly labelled controls keeps the finished scheme easy to use.
