Before you ask for a panel upgrade

A new appliance is a good reason to review your electrical supply. It is not, by itself, a reason to replace the panel.

Begin with the change you are making

Tell the electrician what you plan to add, from a charging point to a kitchen appliance. Keep the product information and installation requirements together. A quote is more useful when it is based on the actual equipment.

Ask what the assessment will cover

The existing supply, circuit arrangement and proposed loads all matter. Ask whether the initial visit includes a written assessment, and whether there is a separate charge for it. Avoid choosing a solution solely from a photograph.

Make the scope clear

A quotation should explain what is included, what depends on further inspection and who handles any permits or utility coordination. Ask about access, the expected interruption to power and any work that must be completed by another trade.

Keep the handover information

Agree what records, test information and operating instructions will be provided. Store them with the property documents so they are easy to find when the next project comes along.

General planning information. Your electrician should assess the installation and the requirements that apply to your property.
